The OnePlus 13 doesn’t have Qi2, but tries to fake it with new charger and these cases

The OnePlus 13 is here and while it doesn’t make any dumb excuses about lacking wireless charging, it does still snub Qi2. However, the OnePlus 13 does still debut “Mag,” a collection of first-party cases that add the magnetic aspect of Qi2 to the device after the fact.

Officially, the OnePlus 13 is based on the Qi 1.3.3 standard, meaning it doesn’t natively support a ring of magnets that can be used for charger alignment or accessory mounting, like MagSafe in Apple’s newer iPhones. That’s disappointing, of course, as only a single Android phone to date has adopted this tech, and it seems like everyone else is just content with ignoring the updated standard despite the obvious consumer benefits.

OnePlus didn’t offer a firm reason for leaving out Qi2 beyond mentioning thickness and connectivity concerns, but the company isn’t leaving customers without an option.

Alongside the launch of OnePlus 13, OnePlus is debuting “Mag,” a new lineup of first-party cases that have magnets built-in to deliver the main benefits of Qi2. There are three cases available – Wood Grain, Aramid Fiber, and Sandstone.

We’ve tried out all of these cases, and they fit just as well as you’d expect for a first-party case. The Aramid Fiber case doesn’t have a texture to it, but feels a bit on the softer side, has absorbed damage well in our testing over the past few weeks, and has a very strong magnet that matches up with the best MagSafe accessories for iPhone. Meanwhile, the Sandstone case is a solid alternative at a lower cost, and brings back the grippy texture that OnePlus used on its very first smartphone.

Personally, the case that particularly got my attention was the Wood Grain case, which adds a natural texture to the OnePlus 13, even though it’s just veneer. The case is thin and has a very strong magnet, and doesn’t fully hide the flat frame of the OnePlus 13 like the others do. Personally, I’m a big fan of this one.

OnePlus will be selling these cases starting at $24.99 USD.

  • OnePlus 13Aramid Fiber magnetic case – $39.99 USD / $54.99 CAD
  • OnePlus 13 Wood Grain magnetic case – $39.99 USD / $54.99 CAD
  • OnePlus 13 Sandstone magnetic case – $24.99 USD / $34.99 CAD

Meanwhile, there’s also a new AIRVOOC charger that uses these magnets.

The $79.99 USD charger mounts magnetically for 50W wireless charging, and has a fan for cooling that can be controlled through OxygenOS. It works well enough, but personally I struggle to understand why this exists. Magnetic chargers make sense to me from an alignment perspective, but OnePlus’ version is all about added speed and cooling, which would seemingly be solved by just using the wire instead (especially seeing as you’ll need the regular SuperVOOC charger to get full power via this magnetic accessory).

All of these accessories are available now, as is the OnePlus 13.

The OnePlus 13R also has a magnetic case available, but the phone itself lacks wireless charging entirely.
