IKEA’s new lights, sensors, and remotes work with Google Home through Matter, and they’re super cheap [U]

IKEA has announced over 20 new Matter-connected smart home products coming to market soon.

Best known for its furniture, IKEA has also been investing in smart home tech over the past few years. Today, the company has announced 21 new smart home products that are all compatible with the Matter standard, meaning you’ll also be able to use them in Google Home.

The new devices slot into three categories, as IKEA explains:

  • Lighting – The new smart bulb range from IKEA. Comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, lumen levels and styles, including colour and white spectrum options, and dimmable features.
  • Sensors – motion, air quality, humidity and water leakage sensors designed to support wellbeing and prevent damage
  • Control – Remotes that make it easy to control devices from a distance, and a smart plug that can turn any product into a smart product.

The lights are self-explanatory, with IKEA offering E27/E26, P45 E14, and GU10 bulbs, as well as some decorative bulbs that you can use with E14 or E27 sockets. The “KAJPLATS” lineup includes both color-changing and “white spectrum” bulbs. Pricing lands between “£4 to £9” as The Verge notes, making these very affordable.

Meanwhile, IKEA is also launching a set of Matter-compatible sensors including motion, door/window, temperature/humidity, air quality, and water leak sensors. These can be use in Matter ecosystems for automations, but some of the sensors such as the “ALPSTUGA” air quality sensor have built-in displays to show relevant information.

Finally, a collection of remotes will enable physical control of smart home products. It’s unclear exactly how they will be leveraged in an app like Google Home, but IKEA is offering the remotes in different colors and with different hardware features beyond just buttons, including a scroll wheel.

There’s also a smart plug.

Update 12/9: IKEA has started selling some of its new smart home products in the US market. The new light bulbs have not yet arrived, but the sensors and remotes are now available for purchase.
