WhatsApp might be the next Android app to support Resume on Windows 11 PCs

Android might not be an official mobile branch to any desktop operating system — not yet, at least — but the past decade or so has seen plenty of first and third-party integrations with Windows. WhatsApp users might be next in line for a big desktop upgrade, as it could be the next service to see native support for Microsoft’s “Cross-Device Resume” feature.

Cross-Device Resume began building out support last year for Microsoft’s own OneDrive, before adding Office, Edge, and Spotify into the mix in the Release Preview Channel last month. If you took Spotify’s addition as a hint towards future third-party integrations to come, you’d be right, as Windows Latest is reporting WhatsApp could be next on the list. After initial hints in January, it seems like support for WhatsApp is rolling out to more devices under Windows 11’s “Resume” menu in settings, though unfortunately, enabling the feature doesn’t actually do anything just yet.

Because of that, it’s unclear exactly how WhatsApp will specifically support Cross-Device Resume, though Windows Latest speculates it could skip directly to your recently-opened chats or, if supported, allow you to handoff voice calls between devices. Still, though, that’s just speculation — all we know for certain is that WhatsApp is currently working towards this toggle eventually doing something, and presumably, that would involve making your inbox even easier to access than Meta’s already-available desktop client.

This addition would be the latest move from WhatsApp to better bridge the connection between desktop and mobile. In addition to that dedicated PC app, the company recently began testing voice and video calls in its web client, allowing you to place calls, share your screen, and more. It also brings those features to Linux-based computers for the first time, as that OS still lacks support for any kind of native client.
