Xiaomi wants to release new versions of its Google Tensor-like chip every year, globally

Xiaomi has confirmed that it has plans to continue its Google Tensor-like in-house chipset efforts, with a new version of the chip each year.

Speaking to CNBC at MWC 2026, Xiaomi confirmed that it will “likely” launch new version of its XRing smartphone chip every year, much like Google does for the Tensor chipset in Pixel phones.

XRing 01 first launched last year in the Xiaomi 15S Pro and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra. The chip is built on a 3nm process with TSMC. Presumably, future versions of the chip would advance in process and performance, but Xiaomi didn’t reveal any details.

The other big piece of information here was that Xiaomi plans to use these in-house chipsets in global markets too, rather than solely in China. Xiaomi 15S Pro never launched outside of China, and the company’s Xiaomi 17 series, which just launched globally, is powered exclusively by Snapdragon chips. The focus on its in-house chips certainly makes sense, as Tensor was one reason that Google was expected to weather the RAM crisis better than some other Android brands.

The interview also revealed that Xiaomi’s in-house AI assistant, Xiao AI, will also be expanding to markets outside of China alongside the expansion of the company’s EVs. Google’s Gemini models would apparently power this expansion.
