Google Maps Go gains gradient app icon redesign

Just a few days after the “big” Google Maps received its gradient icon redesign, Google Maps Go has followed suit.

For those unaware, Google Maps Go is effectively a lightweight wrapper for the Maps experience in browsers designed specifically for low-power Android handsets. The functionality is limited compared to the “full-fat” version of Maps, but if you have an older phone or an entry-level model, you still get much of the same experience without taking a performance hit, as it requires less storage, works on slower networks, and is a little more efficient.

Often, these kinds of apps aren’t updated as frequently for various reasons, but to Google’s credit, Google Maps Go already has the new gradient app redesign ready and should be rolling out right now. As we note, the new icon is identical to the Google Maps icon, but it includes the “GO” tagline with a light drop shadow arc to make it clear that this isn’t the same application. This makes it obvious which app you’re choosing in your app drawer or when placed on your homescreen.

Interestingly, the app itself has not been updated. Merely the icon. This is a PWA after all, so you shouldn’t need to download anything from the Play Store. The last update for Google Maps Go rolled out over two years ago, back in October 2023. In that regard, it might be easier to access via a web browser rather than use this method, but it does have some benefits when installed.

At least the brand identity is now cohesive, no matter which version of Google Maps or Google Maps Go you use day-to-day.
