iOS 27 will add inline replies & photo reactions to Android-iPhone RCS

iOS 27 will introduce the next big update to Android-iPhone messaging with support for inline replies and photo reactions.

With iOS 27 beta 2, RCS conversations with Android users now support inline replies. On the iPhone, long-pressing a chat in the Messages app offers a “Reply” option that supports threading.

On Android, Google Messages will show replies with the original message included above. In the example from Reddit, the screenshot shows the latest Google Messages beta, while the other participant is running iOS 27 beta 2.

Additionally, photo reactions are now accompanied by emoji instead of a text description.

RCS Universal Profile 2.7 from June 2024 added support for “enabling Replies and Reactions (including Custom Reactions) to sent and received messages.” That release also introduced the ability to edit, recall, and delete sent messages for all parties.

It’s great that this quality-of-life improvement is coming, though we’re currently on RCS Universal Profile 4.0.

iOS 27 is expected to get a public launch in September. The public beta will start in July, with the early builds proving unexpectedly stable. This follows end-to-end encryption for cross-platform RCS being introduced with iOS 26.5 in May.
