GrapheneOS phone from Motorola arrives next year, ‘higher end’ compared to Pixel with a price to match

The privacy-focused GrapheneOS is making its way to dedicated hardware soon, with a device in the works from Motorola. According to a quick update on that device, it’ll be “higher end” than a Pixel with a price to match, and it’ll be coming sometime next year.

Motorola first confirmed that it was working with GrapheneOS early this year, but without much to share about what that device would bring to the table. It was always going to be a flagship-tier device given the requirements of GrapheneOS, though.

In a post on Mastodon, GrapheneOS shares that the “initial devices” – note, plural – “should be available in 2027.” They’ll apparently offer “higher end hardware” compared to Google Pixel devices that currently run Graphene, “at a higher price” too. Qualcomm’s flagship chips are specifically mentioned here, with “lower end” devices not meeting requirements around updates and security features.

The initial devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027. The initial devices will be flagships so they’ll be higher end hardware than Pixels at a higher price. Lower end devices will take more time to meet our requirements since the updates and security features aren’t as good. It’s mostly due to how Qualcomm handles it. The latest Snapdragon flagships have the best security features. We’ll also need Motorola to start paying them for longer updates below flagships.

As it stands, only Google Pixel phones can run GrapheneOS, with every Tensor-powered Pixel having builds available. The expansion to Motorola is a big deal, but we’ll have to wait and see when these arrive to know if they’ll stick the landing amidst privacy-conscious buyers.
