The Pixel 3a might be the most important Google smartphone to date

Google Pixel was designed to be a premium smartphone effort, but that all changed in 2019 with the debut of the Pixel 3a. The budget-conscious launch went on to be a turning point for the Pixel’s history and, looking back, it might just be the single most important Google smartphone ever.

Looking back over the past decade of Pixel smartphones, I’m not sure you can point at any one device and say it was more important than the Pixel 3a. The original Pixel set the foundation, of course, and Pixel 6 launched Google’s efforts into a new era, but Pixel 3a gave Google a taste of what it was always after – market success.

The Pixel 3a almost immediately shot up to the top of best-seller lists, massively propelled Google’s US smartphone sales, and was the driving force behind setting Google’s first big shipment records. That success ultimately led to several Pixel A-series successors that have similarly resonated in the market. These more affordable devices just nail the fundamentals at a price that’s hard to beat, especially considering the cost of a Pixel 10a is only $100 more than the Pixel 3a originally started at.

Google is finding at least some success in the flagship market nowadays. Pixel phones are very much hitting their stride in 2026 not only in terms of design and functionality, but also in the market as a whole. I’d very much argue, though, that the Pixel 3a was the lifejacket that kept this project going. The failure of the Pixel 4 left scars on Google’s smartphone efforts, but the Pixel 3a’s resounding success was surely a huge deciding factor on what would come next.

And, in 2026, I think this phone holds up remarkably well from a hardware perspective. There are modern budget phones that cost just as much as the Pixel 3a did when it came out that feel a lot worse than this one. The Pixel 3a is long dead at this point with software support having ended in 2022, but its legacy lives on.

Did you ever own a Pixel 3a?
