Survey suggests first day Apple Watch sales beat all Android Wear devices sold in 2014

The latest estimates from Slice Intelligence suggest that Apple sold just under 1 million units of its new smartwatch on the first day or pre-orders, an unsurprising figure considering the fact that the Cupertino company sold 74 million iPhones in Q4 2014. Knowing the number of Apple Watches sold, and assuming it’s correct, we can say with certainty that Apple sold more Apple Watches over the weekend than the combined various OEMs (LG, Samsung, etc.) shipped Android Wear devices in 2014.

This assumption is based on another number released by Canalys in February, suggesting that around 720,000 Android Wear devices were shipped in the entirety of 2014 (although it’s worth remembering that many of these devices didn’t launch until the later parts of the year). Still, this means that Apple managed to sell more of its smartwatch on the first day of pre-orders than all of the Android Wear device manufacturers sold across several months.

With this in mind, the Apple Watch is also on its way to pass total Android Wear devices ever shipped (if it hasn’t already). If we assume that Canalys’ 720,000 number is correct for all of 2014, and consider the fact that not many new Android Wear devices have come to market so far in 2015, the total number of Android Wear devices ever shipped is probably somewhere in the realm of 1 million—or maybe just beyond that. It has been several days since orders of the Apple Watch opened up, too, so there have surely been many more orders placed and the total has likely passed the 1 million mark by now.

As for another interesting statistic, the lowest-end Apple Watch Sport reportedly made up around 55-60% of all Apple Watch pre-orders to date. This would put the Apple Watch Sport pre-order number on day 1 at around 500,000, which is probably far beyond the total number of devices sold in 2014 for any one of the Android Wear OEMs—including Motorola.
