Starting today, the Project Tango Development Kit tablet is available to purchase in the Google Store — beyond the United States — for developers in South Korea and Canada. And on August 26th, it’ll be available in quite a few more places: Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Google’s Project Tango is an interesting initiative that, through the use of custom sensors and cameras, gives computers the ability to “sense the world around them,” as the company puts it, and gain the spatial perception that we humans have. For example, using a combination of depth and wide-angle cameras along with special software that are all a part of Project Tango, developers could make it easy to accurately measure objects in the real world right from a phone or tablet.
We first learned about Google’s plans to expand availability of this tablet back in April when it was still selling for $1,024. It now costs just $512, which is reasonable considering the specifications of the device. The tablet packs an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor with a hefty 4GB of RAM, a meaty 128GB of onboard storage, a 7-inch 1920 x 1080 HD display, and of course includes a bunch of custom Project Tango software that gives developers access to these new sensors and cameras so they can begin building their own apps with them.
