The recently announced Huawei Watch was discovered to have an unused and unannounced speaker inside, which we showcased in a video last month. Now, Google+ user David Sears has tinkered with the ASUS ZenWatch 2 and found that it too contains an untapped speaker inside.
At this point, Android Wear does not feature any support for using a speaker. With the recent wave of smartwatches carrying the hardware for it, however, it seems likely that an update will soon come to the platform to take advantage of the currently untapped hardware.
It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for Google to release a software update that enables existing hardware. Earlier this year, the company pushed an Android Wear update to enable WiFi for a number of already released devices. LG also recently announced the Urbane 2 smartwatch with hardware support for LTE, despite the fact that Android Wear does not actually support it yet.
The most obvious use case for a speaker on a smartwatch would be for notification sounds and taking calls, although playing music could also potentially be useful in a pinch. Google generally releases Android Wear updates every 3 months, so we should get one more update before 2015 comes to a close.
