NVIDIA releases refreshed Shield Tablet K1 with quad-core Tegra chip, costs just $200

NVIDIA has just released a slightly revised edition of its powerful 2014 Shield Tablet. Very little has changed in terms of specifications, but the new $200 price point means this could be one of the tablets to buy this holiday season…

To keep the cost down, NVIDIA has opted not to include a bunch of gaming accessories, or other extras in with the Tablet K1. There’s no more stylus (or built-in silo) and, very unusually, there’s no power adapter or USB cable in the packaging, so you’ll have to use an existing one. Apart from that, very little has changed from the last Shield Tablet. There are some minor differences in design and materials, but all internal specifications are unchanged.

The NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1 has an 8-inch 1920 x 1200 resolution display, and is powered by the Tegra K1 quad-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz, with graphics provided by a Kepler GPU. There’s 2GB RAM and 16GB storage as well as a MicroSD card slot for expansion. Adding to its multimedia experience, there’s a pair of front-facing speakers, a 5MP camera on the front and another 5MP sensor on the back, both with HDR.

Other notable specs include the 19.75Wh battery, Bluetooth 4.0 LE support and Wi-Fi 802.11 with 2×2 MIMO and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency compatibility. All this is packed in a device which measures 9.2mm thin and weighs 390g.

Although the device ships with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box, NVIDIA has committed to bringing Android’s latest OS, Marshmallow, to the new tablet before the holiday season.

If you’re interested, you can check out the new Shield Tablet K1 on Amazon, where’s it’s available to order for just $199.99. We have no doubt that the K1 is still going to be a fantastic tablet for the price. But with the likes of ASUS’ ZenPad S and the upcoming Acer Predator gaming tablet, it has competition at very similar prices.
