Following a slight redesign of the Google Drive website last week, the Android client is getting a number of small updates like homescreen shortcuts and the ability to upgrade your storage plan through the app. Additionally, version 2.4.311 will be the last update for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich.
Tapping the new ‘Upgrade storage’ option from the navigation drawer will take users to the Drive storage page that breaks down total available space and lets them upgrade to different monthly plans. As it is a Chrome Custom Tab, users are likely already logged into their Google Account.
Additionally, a new shortcut widget allows you to place files and folders on the homescreen for direct access. The widget can be dragged to the homescreen from the widget pane and asks users which Google Account they want to select from. This shortcut joins the Drive toolbar and Drive scan widget.
Version 2.4.311 will also be the last update the supports Android 4.0 devices. The four year old OS is only used by 1.6% of Android users according to the August distribution numbers. The update is rolling out now and the full changelog is below:
- Easily upgrade your storage plan in-app
- Add homescreen shortcuts to your favorite files
- Receive comment notifications
- Performance improvements and bug fixes
- This is the last supported release of Drive for Android on all Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) devices. Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) users will receive no further updates to Drive on Android. Learn more about Google Apps update policy: https://support.google.com/a/answer/6288871
