One of my favorite smartphone features over the years has been wireless charging. There’s simply nothing that’s more convenient, but nonetheless, we’ve been seeing fewer and fewer devices embracing the technology as of late. One big reason for that may be wireless charging’s biggest flaw – speed.
Wireless charging is inherently slower than wired. In the past year, we’ve seen some great improvements in faster charging over the Qi standard, but LG has baked up its own solution, and it has some big claims for the technology.
According to LG, its new 15W wireless charging pad, a world-first by the way, can charge a smartphone’s battery 50 percent in just 30 minutes. That’s just about as fast as your average quick charger.
While this claim should be taken with a grain of salt since the company neglected to tell us the battery capacity that test was done with, it’s still impressive to see such fast charging without a wired connection.
The company further claims that current devices will wireless charging will be compatible with this pad, but it didn’t mention which standard it supported. This new 15W wireless charger is set to go on sale soon in North America Europe, and Austrailia, but pricing has not been confirmed.
