Pixel 8 and 8 Pro get camera and UI fixes with January 2024 update

With January 1 falling on a Monday, Google took two additional days to deliver the first update of 2024 for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.

Portrait Mode is still partly broken on Pixel 8 Pro although google said it would be fixed the january update. 3 Months after launch the Portrait mode has less features than the Pixel 2.

The cause of the bug is that no depth map is saved, the effect is directly baked into the jpeg. So you can't change the strength of the effect based on the original hardware- and software generated depth map. You can only apply another software based layer wich increases the strength (and the artefacts).

Until it's fixed: don't use portrait mode at all. Than you still have full control over the effects you add on top.
