After completing the English rollout to free users on Android at the start of this week, Gemini Live is adding support for new languages.
Starting today, Gemini Live is beginning to support French, German, Portuguese, Hindi, and Spanish on Android. Full availability is set for the coming weeks. More broadly, Google plans to add support for conversing with Gemini Live in over 40 languages in the coming weeks.
Gemini Live “will support conversations in up to two languages on the same device” with plans to expand. As such, you can start speaking one language and then switch to the other in the same conversation.
End users will be “notified via an in-product notification when their preferred language becomes available.” This is how you set a preferred language:
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google app and at the top, tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings > Google Assistant > Languages.
- Choose a supported language.
- Optionally, you can add a second supported language. For now, you can set and use up to two languages with Gemini Live.
Meanwhile, Google is making the new Calendar, Tasks, and Keep Gemini Extensions available in more languages “over the coming weeks.” The Utilities Extension on Android that replaces the Google Assistant fallback for setting timers and alarms, media control, and other device actions (flashlight, volume, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.) is also rolling out. Gemini Live does not yet support Extensions.
