Google’s Pixel smartphones have steadily been growing over the past few years, but new data claims that the company saw 3x growth in North America in just one month, and that seems way too good to be true.
Data for October 2024 published by StatCounter shows that Google Pixel now makes up a whopping 12.9% of the North American market, up from a mere 4.76% in September. That beats out Motorola, and makes up over half of Samsung’s share as well.
The bulk of the growth seems to come from iPhone, as Apple’s share fell by around 4%. Motorola, Xiaomi, and OnePlus also fell by slight margins, while Samsung saw a very slight 0.25%~ gain.
It’s stunning growth on Google’s part, but it’s rather hard to believe. StatCounter explains on an FAQ page that it gathers this data using tracking code analytics data from “1.5 million sites globally.” The data isn’t necessarily based on direct sales or even user data, but rather the data from these websites where the tracking code is installed. As such, this is sampled data, with room for error. That said, with so many sites contributing to this data, the sample taken is certainly going to be at least mostly reflective of reality.

I'm one of those that came from iPhone; I've been on iOS for the last nine years but T-Mobile's trade-in offers for the 16 were not favorable. I would have to pay an additional $100 to "downgrade" from the 14ProMax to the 16Plus or...my other choice was a Pixel9ProXL with 256GB storage for free plus 1 year of Google One with AI free. It's been a little rough since I'm fairly locked-in to Apple's ecosystem but I really like the Pixel and Android.
Google, in its latest earnings call, said that it was seeing “strong” Pixel 9 demand, but stopped short of being specific to regions. A report last month did say that Google saw its “highest-ever” quarterly sales in Q3, which ended just prior to October’s data being gathered by StatCounter.
We’d still be surprised if the data here is fully accurate, but even if it’s only partially true, it represents massive growth on Google’s part, and it’s clear that Google is starting to make an impact on its home turf.
Through 2023, Google had peaked at 5% of the market in North America, and made up around 3% of phones shipped in North America as of early this year.
