Google Maps rolling out new teal accent color on Android, iOS

Like other first-party apps that lack Dynamic Color theming, Google Maps currently uses a blue accent for buttons and other UI elements, but that looks to be changing to teal.

Update 12/12: This teal accent color is now appearing on iOS (version 24.49.3), with the “Google Maps has a new look” prompt explaining how it’s the “Same great app, now with fresher colors.” The fact that Google needed to have an introductory message for this change is interesting.

Update 12/10: The teal accent color is more widely rolling out in Google Maps for Android. You can see the blue removed from the FAB (floating action button), while the accent color for the currently selected tab has also changed. The text label has gone from blue to black.

Old vs. new

Like with the FAB, a darker teal is leveraged in carousels for Directions, while everything else uses a lighter shade.

On listings, Google has also updated blue icons throughout. After force stopping Google Maps (from App info), we’re seeing it with version 24.49.06.x (stable + beta).

Original 11/13: Users are beginning to see a teal accent color that’s applied to the Google Maps bottom bar and icons like directions and location. Recent screenshots from Google Maps announcements have featured this new shade.

The teal accent is also very apparent when viewing listings, with Directions, Start, and other buttons in the carousel updated.

This looks really nice and gives the app a more modern and adaptive look.

Old vs. new

It’s unclear why Google chose this more muted color that’s not really aligned with the company’s usual blue, red, yellow, and (bright) green palette. We’ve reached out to the company for more information. Meanwhile, Google Maps continues to not adopt Dynamic Color on Android.

This server-side change is not yet widely rolled out on Android or iOS, and follows the updated color palette for the map layer introduced this time last year

It follows other recent design changes like moving the corner weather widget to the bottom sheet, as well as the simplified bottom bar with just three tabs.
