Google Home struggles with buttons as IKEA confirms Matter connectivity issues

IKEA’s smart home tech gets a lot of the basics – including price – right, but Matter connectivity issues are a downer on the whole experience, including some problems with the newfound button compatibility in Google Home that isn’t working right for some.

If you’ve struggled to set up or pair Matter-over-Thread gear from IKEA, you’re not alone, and IKEA knows about it. Speaking to The Verge, IKEA says:

The launch of our Matter range has been highly anticipated, and for most customers the products work seamlessly, as intended. That said, we are aware that some customers are experiencing connection issues when setting up their devices in certain home environments, and we take that very seriously. We have a dedicated team reviewing the raised concerns and working closely with our ecosystem partners, and the Connectivity Standards Alliance, to better understand the issues and improve the experience.

IKEA’s Matter devices include everything from various smart lights to buttons like the uber-cheap “Bilresa” smart button. The Verge reports that they’ve struggled to pair some of their IKEA bulbs and sensors to Apple Home and Home Assistant, while also noting that the “Bilresa” smart button would disconnect after initially pairing to Amazon Alexa.

That’s in line with my experience this week as well. Following Google’s announcement that, finally, the Google Home app supports smart buttons for automations, I immediately started trying to test the functionality with some “Bilresa” buttons I picked up at CES earlier this year. But I was also quickly stuck in a loop of things simply not working. The one button I’d paired a few weeks ago was suddenly no longer connected, not working with any automations I tried it in. On re-pairing the button, it wasn’t always pairing to my network properly, and wouldn’t show up in the automations flow even if it did successfully pair. The latter seems to be common, though I did notice that the button would usually appear as an automation trigger a little while after it first connected – there’s just some weird delay.

At this point, I’ve still yet to get one of these buttons fully working in Google Home, and I’m also struggling to get IKEA’s “Dirigera” hub working through Home too. It’s messy, to say the least, though it does seem some users have managed to get things working properly, in line with IKEA’s comments.

Hopefully, fixes to Matter connectivity on IKEA products will help out with the “Bilresa” Google Home issues.
