Android is losing Outlook ‘Lite’ as Microsoft kills its lightweight mail app

Microsoft is shutting down its Outlook Lite app and removing it from the Google Play Store as it plans to shift focus to the full-featured version.

Just four years after announcing Outlook Lite for Android, Microsoft has announced it will no longer support the “faster” email app starting May 25, 2026 (via Neowin). The company says that Outlook users will still be able to use the full-fledged email app, as was the case before the trimmed version was available.

Outlook Lite offered a few benefits over Outlook, though it lacked a lot. The goal was to offer something more accessible to users who needed speed without the feature set of a larger Android app. It was optimized for devices with as little as 1GB of RAM, which meant less comprimises for midrange phones.

In any case, users will need to switch to the traditional Outlook app when support for the smaller version ends. Mailbox access will be disabled, and the app itself will no longer work at the end of May. Even if it’s still downloaded, Outlook Lite users will still be effectively locked out.

This comes after the company announced the decision at the end of last year. Some time after the announcement, new installations were blocked via the Google Play Store or other official methods. In essence, this change will affect diehard users.

Microsoft is making the switch easier by adding an “Upgrade” button in the dying app, even if the move is already as easy as logging into a different app with the same Microsoft account. That button will take users to the Google Play Store to update.
