Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked is officially set for July 22nd, but thanks to some all-too-common leaks, you don’t need to wait to find out what that wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 might look like.
Android Headlines shared a ton of seemingly-official renders of the Fold 8 ahead of Unpacked, giving us our best look yet at Samsung’s new design offering for its next-gen foldable. The device, which features a first-gen Pixel Fold-esque passport design, is seen here in three colors, all of which will be all too familiar to Galaxy fans: Cream, Graphite, and Lavender. Today’s leak also points to a “Pistachio” shade as the Samsung.com exclusive, but unfortunately, we might have to wait for the official launch event to get a proper glimpse.
The front 5.5-inch QHD+ display sounds like a godsend for anyone still dreaming of the days of “pocketable” smartphones. It’s sporting a 16:10 aspect ratio — something I called back in February based off of Samsung’s leaked renders — which is bound to feel like a massive shift compared to the ultra-tall panels most of us are used to these days. Even decade-old devices with 16:9 screens can feel pretty wide compared to what you’re reading this on right now, and this panel’s going to be even wider than that.
Some people — myself included — might see that promise as a breath of fresh air compared to the past few years of OnePlus Open-esque foldables, but it’s also good news for the inner display. The Galaxy Z Fold 8’s 7.6-inch QHD+ panel might sound familiar on its face, but with a 4:3 aspect ratio, it should offer an improved (though still imperfect) media experience compared to the nearly-square screens found on current-gen folding phones. Scaling might also be improved on certain games, such as my beloved Balatro.
Despite the new form factor, the rest of the device feels awfully familiar. It’s measuring in at 9.7mm thick when folded, 4.5mm thick when unfolded, and weighs around 200 grams or so. Credit to Samsung for the job it’s done slimming its phones down over the past couple of generations, especially when compared to Google’s recent releases. This device will likely weigh about as much as the Pixel 10, despite a full second display and the requisite hinge that comes alongside it.
Under the hood, we’re not looking at anything particularly surprising. The Fold 8 will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with Samsung’s “for Galaxy” in-house customizations, paired with 12GB of RAM and a starting configuration of 256GB of storage. Upgraders can look for 512GB and 1TB options, apparently, but don’t get your hopes up for a variant with 16GB of memory — it might be just too hard to come by these days. Finally, expect a 4,800mAh battery with just 25W charging speeds; perhaps Samsung is keeping its most powerful hardware for its otherwise-familiar “Ultra” foldable.
