Nexus 9 root already possible courtesy of Chainfire

The Nexus 9 is one of the most exciting Android devices to hit the market in a long time, and with it comes the latest version of Android: 5.0 Lollipop. And with new hardware and a new operating system, it was only a matter of time before one of the better known developers in the rooting space achieved such on the tablet. It’s already available thanks to Chainfire, and it only takes a couple extra steps to get working.

This root comes packed with a special version of SuperSU, which has been made to work with just the Nexus 9. Builds of SuperSU for 64-bit devices have existed in the past, but Chainfire says that they weren’t tested until now and getting this root ready for download took a while longer than he anticipated because there were some kinks that needed to be worked out.

The CF-Auto-Root framework, which is used to run the jailbreak, hasn’t yet been updated to automatically work with the Nexus 9, so Chainfire says that this root is going to take a few more steps than usual (which are slightly more detailed in the root’s README):

It pretty much comes down to:
– enable oem unlocking in Android’s developer options
– fastboot oem unlock
– fastboot boot inject.img
– fastboot flash boot patched.img

If you don’t know how to root the Nexus 9 based on the above instructions alone, this root isn’t likely for you. Many root applications are going to be broken anyway, because this is the first working root for the retail release of Lollipop and developers haven’t had time yet to make sure their apps are ready. If you want to go ahead with downloading the root, head over to the XDA-Developers discussion thread.
