Camera app mod improves quality and increases video recording times on Samsung Galaxy Note 4

We already described the camera performance of the Galaxy Note 4 as “pretty incredible” in our detailed review, but if you’re willing to root your device, a new XDA modification lets you push the camera app even further.

First, the mod removes the slight file-compression Samsung applies to still photos, increasing the JPEG quality from 96% to 100%. Video recordings get a much more substantial boost in quality, from 20-28mbit (depending on mode) to 40-65mbit. It also significantly increases video recording times …

The maximum video recording times set by Samsung on the Note 4 range from five minutes at dual DHD or UHD quality to 10 minutes in dual HD or Smooth Motion settings. The mod doubles the five-minute limits to ten minutes, and triples the ten-minute limits to a full half-hour.

The mod also re-enables both camera and flash when battery power is low, as well as allowing you to use the camera app during a call.

Your device needs to be rooted first, but if you’re willing to reset your device, then installation is as simple as flashing the downloaded file through recovery and reboot. Alternatively, you can take a slightly more involved route to overwrite the existing camera app with the new one.

Head over to the XDA developers forum to download the file and to find full instructions.
