Oppo Find 7 hands-on and first impressions (Video)

When Oppo’s Find 7 was first announced, it was one of the front runners in its category. A smartphone with a 5.5-inch QHD display and the latest specs under the hood. Unfortunately, it took a while for it to be released and LG’s G3 took the QHD throne first. Either way, the Find 7 is a powerful smartphone that’s just as capable as its competition.

Today we’re taking a quick look at what this device has to offer. There are a lot of similarities between the Find 7 and LG G3. In some aspects they are the same phone, but which one is going to win at the end of the day? Due to carrier availability, LG might have this one in the bag.

As far as specifications go, the Find 7 is rocking a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440. Internally, you’ll find a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, Adreno 330, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. As you may have noticed, on paper the Find 7 is an LG G3 or vice versa. The carry identical specifications in almost every way, but don’t be confused, these are definitely different phones.

The back features a 13-megapixel camera capable of shooting up to UHD quality video, while the front side has a 5-megapixel shooter. Along the bottom edge, we have three dimly-lit capacitive navigation buttons and a beautiful Skyline notification light that pulsates along the bottom of the Find 7.

Inside of the box you get a decent pair of earbuds with a selection of tips, a micro USB cable, and a special wall charge to take advantage of the Find 7’s Vooc charging technology. This new charging feature will allow you to charge the Find 7 from 0 to 75 percent in 30 minutes (and about 55-60 minutes to 100 percent). It’s pretty amazing, but will only work with the special included wall charger.

Unfortunately, out of the box the Find 7 is running Android 4.3 with Oppo’s Color OS skin on top. Hopefully we’ll see an update to KitKat at some point in the future, but it’s not a deal breaker in my opinion. Color OS offers several customization options that you may find useful. One of my favorite software features is the Gestures panel. With a simple swipe from the far left corner of the status bar, you can access the Gesture panel that allows for custom gestures to perform various actions on the device. It’s a very cool feature. Overall, I was impressed with the Find 7. It’s a very solid device. I really dig the Astro Black version of the Find 7 and its carbon fiber style. There’s absolutely nothing that feels cheap about this device. It’s a quality phone at a flagship price. Currently, the Find 7 is available for $599 off-contract from Oppo. It’s only available for GSM carriers, but if you have the opportunity to get your hands on one, I’d recommend it at this point.
