NVIDIA SHIELD updated to 1.2 w/ support for 4K photos, better streaming, more

NVIDIA’s SHIELD Android TV box is already becoming known as one of the best set-top boxes to ever exist, and now it’s getting even better. Thanks to a recent update, version number 1.2, the device is getting support for 4K resolution in the Photos & Videos app, optimized streaming of Netflix and Google Play Movies, enhancements to NVIDIA’s GameStream service, and other enhancements.

Besides the newly-added 4K photo support and streaming upgrades, today’s update also features an upgrade to the SHIELD Remote for better response times (and low battery notifications), boosted audio levels for gameplay recorded and broadcasted through NVIDIA Share, enhancements to the SD Card auto-move setting, and improved responsiveness for wireless keyboards.

While they aren’t exactly new thanks to this software upgrade, the release notes also mention some newly-available apps and games on the Play Store. Fox Sports Go, CBS News, Doom 3: BFG Edition, Game of Thrones, and Machinarium are a few of the notable additions.

We reviewed the NVIDIA Shield Android TV set-top box earlier this month, and we agree with the general consensus—this thing is an absolute beast. If you’re interested, the base model goes for $199. If you plan to install a lot of software though, it might be best to go with the higher-end model, the 500GB NVIDIA Shield Pro for $299.
