Qualcomm promised when it launched the Snapdragon 820 that it’s next processor would offer a huge jump in performance and efficiency over its predecessor. If a benchmark result on Geekbench is anything to go by, those claims look like they’ll be true. Those worried by the fact it’s ‘only’ quad-core should stop worrying now.
In the early hours of this morning, a benchmark test was performed on a device called the Xiaomi ‘Gemini’, which we think could be a code-name for the unreleased Xiaomi Mi 5. The Chinese manufacturer is rumored to be launching the phone before the end of this year, and it could be equipped with the Snapdragon 820.
From the benchmark information, we can see that Xiaomi has clocked the processor at 1.59GHz, which is by no means pushing it to its maximum capability. Qualcomm says it can go up to a maximum of 2.2GHz. Still, even with it being slightly underclocked, the chip managed a single core score of 2,140 and multi-core score of 4,762. For reference, the iPhone 6s Plus (one of the fastest handsets around) scores about 2,500 and 4,424 for single and multi-core respectively. The Moto X Style/Pure running a Snapdragon 808 chip manages just 1,200 and 3,500 while the Exynos-equipped Galaxy Note 5 runs scores of 1,200 and 4,300.
If accurate, the benchmarks suggest clearly that the custom-designed chips have really fast cores that perform better together than virtually every other processor currently available. And that’s despite the fact that there are only four of them. This makes us wonder: Exactly how fast could this chip be if it’s pushed to its maximum, and how will it translate in real-world use? Will the Snapdragon 820 be the chip to beat in 2016, or will Samsung’s newly announced Exynos 8890 give it a real run for its money.
Other information gleaned from the benchmark leak suggests the next Xiaomi flagship will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow and pair the SD820 chip with 3GB RAM to keep things running smoothly.
