Following on from the recent leak seemingly showing the Huawei P9 prototype encased in an identity-protecting plastic shell, the upcoming flagship smartphone has appeared again. This time, the smartphone is completely uncovered, showing a device which takes some of the design influences of last year, and adds some of today’s most high end features…
If the leak published by Evan Blass at Venture Beat is anything to go by (and we have no reason to doubt it), Huawei is working on another slim all-metal device. The smartphone is relatively flat and rectangular, similar to the P8, with slightly rounded edges and shiny, diamond-cut chamfers around the outside of the front panel.
As we’ve seen previously, there’s a dual camera setup on the back. Exactly what this double-lens system for isn’t confirmed yet. It could, like the LG G5, be used to offer both a regular and wide angle lens for a more complete and versatile mobile photography solution. On the other hand, it could be like Huawei’s Honor 6 Plus handset which used dual cameras to offer post-capture refocussing and the ability to use better manual focussing controls while shooting.
Also on the back, we can clearly see a rounded square fingerprint sensor near the top, as well as a white antenna band running along the bottom edge. The cameras sit alongside a dual-LED flash and laser autofocus sensor inside a rectangular glass panel.
Other notable features on show include the front panel which, like last year’s phone, is pretty minimal. It’s just a plain white glass surface without any visible bezel on the left and right sides of the display. Another picture posted in the original blog post shows the bottom edge which clearly has a USB Type-C connector, 3.5mm jack and a loudspeaker.
It’s rumored that the Huawei P9 will feature a high-end Kirin 950 processor and 3GB of RAM as well as 32GB of inbuilt storage. It’ll also likely run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and be powered by a pretty large 3,900mAh battery.
Like the P8, this device will not launch on its own. Three more P9 variants are allegedly planned, including the more affordable P9 Lite, large P9 Max and the more high-end P9 Premium. It’s rumored that the P9 Premium will feature a similar size and spec list to the regular P9, but with 4GB RAM, 64GB or 128GB storage and a more powerful Kirin 955 chip.
The P9 range is expected to launch at some point during the second quarter.
