Android N Settings app revealed in new mockups, hints at sparser visual design

Last month, a screenshot from Google revealed that the Android N Settings app will feature a hamburger menu and now, new mockups from Android Police detail the refreshed Settings app and point to slight visual redesigns in the next version of Android.

Earlier this week, mockups revealed that notifications in Android N would be spaced much closer together with only a faint line acting as a divider. This Settings mockup further hints at a sparser visual design where there are less elements on the screen. The line dividers between each individual settings item are now gone and are only present between each section.

Interestingly, controls for Do Not Disturb are the very first item in the Settings app. Users will be able to immediately switch modes from a drop down menu. In Marshmallow, DND settings were placed in the quick settings panel and according to the mockup of the new panel, DND will also be immediately accessible when pulling down the notification shade.

As users already have the ability to turn DND on at a certain time, it could presumably be tied with a system level night mode that apps can already take advantage of. According to Google, apps can activate a dark mode based on the time of day and previous location. Such a mode was present during Android M’s developer previews, but was removed from the final version.

The Settings app will get glanceable information in the form of items that can list their status. For example, WiFi shows what network it’s connected to and Battery shows the current percentage and battery life estimation. Also detailed in the mockups is the hamburger menu. When users are in a particular setting, the hamburger menu will allow users to switch to a different item.

Android N is expected to be announced at Google I/O in May as a developer preview. Google is also rumored to be removing the app launcher in favor of a more iOS approach.
