Samsung has finally, albeit quietly, launched the new J-series handsets for 2016. The new low-end phones have improved specs on last year, and unlike previous generations, they come with a sturdy, sculpted metal chassis similar to the A-series phones. If the prices are close to those of last generation, these could be very competitive phones (at least by Samsung’s standards).
The best device in Samsung’s latest J-series lineup is undoubtedly the 2016 J7, or J7108. It’s available in sand gold, silver/white and metallic pink and comes equipped with a 5.5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display as well as a large 3,300mAh battery. Both the 5MP front and 13MP back cameras have f/1.9 aperture and 1080p video recording. What’s more, there’s an octa-core 1.6GHz Exynos processor, 3GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by MicroSD up to 128GB extra. This is all built in to a phone measuring 151.7 x 76 x 7.8mm and weighs 170g.
On the spec front, the Galaxy J5 is definitely the lower-end device of the two newly-announced smartphones. It features practically the same, albeit smaller, design. It has a Super AMOLED 5.2-inch 720p display, 3100mAh battery and the same front and back cameras found on the bigger J7. It has slightly less RAM at just 2GB, but the same 16GB internal storage and MicroSD support. Although a few millimeters shorter and narrower than the J7, it is still thicker at 8.1mm and comes in the same three color options.
Both phones are available to order in China from today, but no announcement has been made as to when (or if) they’ll be released in international markets.
