First Android N beta to be released by Google later today

As expected, Android N made an appearance at today’s I/O conference. Following the announcement of N’s final name decision being dependent on users, Google got into the release itself.

While the final build is not yet ready, and will come towards the end of the summer, the company is today releasing a third preview that finally qualifies as “beta”…

According to Dave Burke, which announced the news on stage, the build should be stable enough for people to install it on their main device.

That could be expected, as for being pre-beta releases, the two developer previews were already markedly polished and fairly usable.

As far as features go, however, not much new has been announced; Android N’s multi-window support was mentioned, as were the updated graphics APIs. Most notably, perhaps, was Android N’s support for Virtual Reality.

The devices supported remain the Nexus 6, 9, 6P, 5X, the Nexus Player as well as the Pixel C. You can enroll your device to access the Beta Program here, but if you’re eager to install the latest version yourself, you can manually download it at this link.
