After a false start yesterday, Android Pay is now live in the United Kingdom. Those with compatible credit and debit cards can set up the contactless payment service after downloading the app from the Play Store. Google has also announced that Android Pay is coming soon to Australia and Singapore.
The UK is only the second country Android Pay is available in after launching in the United States last September. Google’s take on contact payments is similar to competing efforts, but has the main advantage of being available on a large number of Android devices.
Those with an eligible MasterCard or Visa credit or debit card from the Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA, and Nationwide Building Society will be able to use Android Pay. In addition to in store payments, it can be used to quickly make purchases in compatible apps.
To encourage users to set up and use Android Pay, Google will be running several promotions:
Also, we will be launching Android Pay Day bringing special offers each month to brighten the last week before pay day. Starbucks UK and Deliveroo will be among the first to reward Android Pay users in the UK. Stay tuned for more offers which will roll out in the months to come.
Google’s post mentions that Android Pay will soon be available in Australia and Singapore. Several Australian banks have already announced support for Pay when it launches. Singapore is a new addition and Google says more countries, banks, and features will be added in the coming months.
