How to set up lockscreen and biometric security on Samsung Galaxy S9 & S9+

With your Galaxy S9 or S9+, the process of protecting everything on your phone with different types of lockscreen security is straightforward. And to make it even quicker to get into your device, Samsung includes multiple biometric options to choose from. Here’s how to set it all up…

How to set up lockscreen and biometric security

  1. Navigating to the screen lock type menu
  2. Setting up a pattern, PIN, or password
  3. Setting up face recognition
  4. Setting up Iris recognition
  5. Setting up fingerprint recognition
  6. Extras

1. Navigating to the screen lock type menu

Let’s navigate to the settings menu where all of these options can be found. First, pull down the notification tray and tap on the gear icon. Next, select Lock screen and security and then choose Screen lock type.

If you already have some sort of lockscreen security set up, you’re going to need to input it to get into the menu.

2. Setting up a pattern, PIN, or password

At the top of the list, you’ll have options for swipe, pattern, PIN, password, or none. Choose one of these and follow the on-screen instructions to set it up.

Note that you will need either a pattern, PIN, or password set up in able to use the fingerprint, face, or IRIS recognition.

3. Setting up face recognition

Tap on the Face option to register your face. You will be greeted with an interface that will ask you to rotate your head within a circle so that that Galaxy S9/S9+ can identify you. While this isn’t as secure as other options, it is a quick way to bypass your lockscreen security.

Once set up, make sure the option is toggled if you would like the phone to unlock when it sees your face.

4. Setting up Iris recognition

Using the Iris scanner is very similar to the facial recognition feature but a little more secure. After you choose the Iris option, you will be directed to line up your eyes with an overlay on the display. This will capture markers in your Iris that the phone can use to accurately identify you when you try to unlock your device.

Just remember that this option only works when the phone can adequately see your eyes. This means it won’t function when you’re wearing sunglasses and even some prescription glasses mess it up.

5. Setting up fingerprint recognition

Lastly, you can register your fingerprints so that you can unlock the handset by just placing one of your fingers onto the sensor on the back of the device. To do this, select Fingerprints and then follow the on-screen directions. The phone will tell you how to place your finger on the sensor so that it can be trained appropriately.

6. Extras

One of the added features the Galaxy S9 and S9+ have is something called ‘Intelligent Scan.’ With this enabled, it uses both facial recognition and the Iris scanner to identify you more securely. To turn this feature on, you’re going to first need to set up Face and Iris as means of securing your phone.
