Holy crap, someone else finally made an Android phone with Qi2 magnets built-in

Folks, it finally happened. Someone other than Google has finally put Qi2 magnets in an Android phone with Motorola’s new Edge 70 Max.

Despite the popularity of Apple’s MagSafe on iPhone, Android manufacturers have been dragging their feet on the adoption of Qi2 over the past few years. Only a single mainstream series, Google’s Pixel 10, has adopted the standard thus far, with everyone else either blatantly ignoring it or using the “Qi2 Ready” shortcut – yes, I’m talking about you, Samsung.

We’ve asked the question multiple times at this point, why aren’t Android brands getting on board? When will someone, anyone else get on board?

Well, someone finally answered the latter.

Motorola has today launched its new Edge 70 Max, a step-down flagship powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 (the same chip in Razr Fold), which is also its first with built-in Qi2 magnets.

Motorola says:

Streamline your setup with the 25W Qi2 magnetic wireless charging. No cables, no clutter. Just fast, wireless charging that fits seamlessly into your daily routine.

The WPC listing for the Motorola Edge 70 Max further confirms this isn’t another “Qi2 Ready” shortcut, this is a true Qi2 smartphone. It supports the Qi 2.2.1 standard under the MPP25 profile. In other words, this is the first non-Pixel, non-iPhone to offer true Qi2 support on the latest version of the standard – HMD’s Skyline launched in 2024 with Qi2 magnets, but not the 25W speeds we see today.

Finally.

Beyond Qi2 support, Edge 70 Max looks like a solid Android phone. A 6.82-inch QHD+ AMOLED display, an aluminum build, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of UFS 4.1 storage, a 7,100 mAh battery, 90W wired charging, IP68/IP69, and just enough camera hardware; 50MP primary, 8MP ultrawide, and a 32MP selfie camera.

It also gets 5 years of security updates. Qi2 is almost exciting enough to ignore that it ships with Android 16 despite being promised just 2 OS updates.

But can I say finally again?

Yes I can.

Finally.

Sadly, though, Motorola isn’t releasing the Edge 70 Max in the States. It’s available now in the UK and other regions for £700.
