Nvidia Shield TV Pro is now $299 – a $100 price hike seven years after the Android TV box launched

The Nvidia Shield TV is an iconic piece of Android hardware but it also hasn’t seen a refresh in the better part of a decade. But, because of the increasingly depressing state of the entire tech industry, Nvidia Shield TV Pro is getting a $100 price hike to $299, seven years after it first launched.

Nvidia Shield TV Pro made its debut in October 2019 and, to this day, remains one of the most capable Android TV streamers on the market. While certain aspects haven’t aged perfectly, such as a lack of AV1 support and others, it remains unmatched in other places.

That’s a big part of the reason that, even so many years after it launched, Nvidia continues to produce the Shield TV.

But the $199 price point is gone. Effective today, Nvidia Shield TV Pro now costs $299.99. Nvidia attributed the price hike to the fact that “the cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry.” Alongside the change in price, Nvidia has also ended production of the base Shield TV that was also introduced in 2019. The “tube” Shield has been out of stock for months at this point, but Shield TV Pro was just restocked at Best Buy.

Early this year, Nvidia said that it would continue software support for the Shield TV for the forseeable future.

Shield isn’t the only streamer going up in price as a result of RAMageddon. Google TV Streamer saw a price hike to $149 recently, while other devices including Apple TV 4K and various Roku streamers also saw price hikes earlier this year.

AI is just great, right?
