Teased back at I/O 2016 and officially announced at the 10/4 event, Daydream View from Google is finally going on sale next week on November 10th. The launch will not be limited to the US, with the VR headset also available in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia.
At launch, the headset will only be available in Slate, with Crimson and Snow coming at a later date. For $79, users are getting a comfortable and light headset made from soft, breathable fabric. A Daydream-ready phone — like the Pixel — slots in up front and is secured by an elastic ban.
In my brief usage, the most interesting part of the Daydream experience is the small, pill-shaped controller that provides amazing accuracy. Its 220 mAh battery lasts 12 hours and charges via USB-C, though that cable does not come included in the box. Conveniently, the controller stows away into the headset when not in use.
Besides being available from the Google Store, the following retailers around the world will also carry the headset:
- United States: Verizon, Best Buy; $79 (USD)
- Canada: Bell, Rogers, Telus, Best Buy; $99 (CAD)
- United Kingdom: EE, Carphone Warehouse; £69 (GBP)
- Germany: Deutsche Telekom; €69 (EUR)
- Australia: Telstra, JB Hi-Fi; $119 (AUD)
Google cites 17 Daydream experiences that will be available from them and third-parties. First-party apps include YouTube VR, Play Movies, and Street View. The Wall Street Journal and New York Times will offer VR journalism experiences. There are also several games including the cute Invasion!, space shooter Gunjack 2: End of Shift, and Harry Potter tie-in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Those who pre-ordered the Pixel should be receiving a promo code to purchase a Daydream View approximate four weeks after the phone has shipped.
