After beginning to test “1080p Enhanced” earlier this year, YouTube TV now appears to be testing an upgraded 720p quality setting with some users.
Google first introduced the enhanced version of 1080p earlier this year, but it’s never been widely available. The new setting uses an improved streaming codec that, while it doesn’t add any resolution, looks visually better thanks to an improved bitrate.
Now, YouTube TV is also testing out an enhanced 720p option with some users.
On Reddit, YouTube TV users on Apple TV, Roku, and other platforms found that a new “720p Enhanced” quality setting had appeared on their devices. The new option is said to improve the picture quality, and it’s a nice addition on Google’s part for channels that may not offer a 1080p stream.
But neither option is widely available right now.
Google revived “1080p Enhanced” for some users back in April, but it’s still not available to everyone. That is, the actual setting doesn’t appear. For most users, “Enhanced” is the default quality, something you can check by looking for “412” under the “Stats for Nerds.”
