The Microsoft Surface Duo 2 is quickly approaching its end of life and as that date nears, Microsoft has just released one last Android 12 update for the device.
As opposed to foldables that ultimately won out, Microsoft’s concept for a book-style smartphone was a dual-screen device with no outer display. The well-built Surface Duo lineup was praised for its hardware and some of its concepts, but didn’t end up succeeding in part due to usability, camera, and software deficiencies.
Now, Microsoft, is preparing to end support for the lineup as a whole.
After ending support on the original Surface Duo last year, Microsoft has just released what is likely the final update for Surface Duo 2. The update, noticed by users on Reddit, is a mere 54MB update on top of Android 12. As Windows Central points out, the Surface Duo 2 only ever received a single Android OS update, from Android 11 to the current Android 12 (specifically 12L, the one that brought some big-screen optimizations).
Microsoft rolled out that Android 12 update in October 2022, and hasn’t provided a single major update to Duo 2 owners in the two years since.
On Microsoft’s website, the company lists the lifecycle for Surface Duo 2 as ending on October 21, 2024. So, unless there are wild plans, the Surface Duo 2 is probably done with new software upgrades of any kinda, which is sad to see.
Microsoft was thought to be working on a foldable, but nothing has materialized just yet.
