You’re probably aware of the SETI@Home project, enabling the spare processing power of home computers to help process chunks of radio telescope data in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Since that initiative, other distributed computing projects for good causes have sprung up. What you may not know is that your Android smartphone or tablet can also participate …
There are two current projects running for Android: FightAIDS@Home, searching for new drugs to block three enzymes the virus needs to survive, and Einstein@Home, searching for pulsars that will help us understand more about the origins of the universe.
Both projects run on BOINC software, which needs Gingerbread (Android 2.3) or higher. You don’t need to worry about the software killing your battery or eating your mobile data allowance: BOINC only kicks in when the device is charging, battery power is above 90 percent and it’s connected to wifi (so ideal for running overnight).
