Update: Versi has also now confirmed that the One M7 Google Play Edition’s update will begin to rollout, as well.
After a few weeks of delays and last-minute issues with Google, HTC this evening has announced that it will begin rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Google Play Edition HTC One M8 tomorrow. In a post on Twitter, HTC’s VP of Product Management Mo Versi confirmed that the update will begin to rollout tomorrow, December 5th at 12PM PT/3PM ET.
The update was originally supposed to rollout to the Google Play Edition One M8 on November 21st, but was delayed several times. Versi said in his tweet today that the company has finally gotten all of the bugs worked out and approval from Google, meaning that the update is ready to fly for tomorrow.
As far as the carrier models of the One M8 go, HTC announced when Android 5.0 Lollipop hit AOSP that it would begin the rollout within 90 days of when it received the code. This puts the updates at rolling out in February 2015 at the latest, assuming there are no significant delays. Google Play Edition devices are, of course, far easier for the company to update, seeing that they run near stock Android without any manufacturer or carrier modifications on top.
Versi also said in a tweet that the One M7’s Lollipop update is still in Google’s lab being tested. The executive promises to update us soon as he hears back.
Google Play Edition HTC One M8 owners should get ready to start checking like crazy for the update tomorrow at 12PM PT/3PM ET. Earlier this week, Lollipop also began rolling to the Google Play Edition Xperia Z Ultra.
