Skype for Web now supports instant messaging on Chromebooks

If you’re a heavy Skype user, you probably aren’t a Chromebook user—and that’s probably because the two have never really played very well together. That’s at least starting to change starting today, though, as Microsoft has announced that Skype for Web is now expanding to be available worldwide, as well as bringing support for IM on Chrome OS and Linux.

Update: We’ve been hard at work and are pleased to announce that Skype for Web (Beta) is now available worldwide! Please see below for a list of supported languages. Also, good news for Chromebook and Linux users: you can now access Skype for Web (Beta) for instant messaging.

If you’re an Internet user—ha—and you have any of the supported browsers (or now, a Chromebook), you can access the Skype web app at any time for free. While today’s update does indeed bring support for instant messaging to Chrome OS, it’s unfortunate to note that there’s no voice and video support quite yet, as those require a separate plug-in.

Chrome OS dev channel update allows windows to span multiple displays

In a Google+ post today by François Beaufort of the Chrome team, Beaufort mentioned the introduction of a long-needed feature to the Chrome OS development channel which allows a window to span multiple displays. The new feature is called “Unified desktop mode” and can be enabled by simply visiting chrome://flags/#ash-enable-unified-desktop if you’re running the newest dev channel version of the browser-based OS.

One example he provides for how this might be useful is that those using Citrix Receiver for Chrome—which allows its users to create and use virtual machines of Windows over the Internet—can now run a multi-display setup of Windows right from their Chromebook. For those who want a simple, easy-to-use computer but might need to use Windows periodically for one or two specific applications, this will be a huge boon and make the Chromebook that much more versatile.

Head over to Google’s Chrome OS channel support page to learn how to switch your instance of Chrome OS to the Dev channel. Bugs and issues with Unified desktop mode can be reported to the Chrome team by pressing <Alt> + <Shift> + i.

Beta channel for Chrome OS bumped to version 43 (Update: Android too!)

Google has bumped the Chrome OS beta channel to version 43 this afternoon, and it’s actually a pretty substantial update. Among other features, the new version includes credit card autofill from Google Wallet, always-on “OK Google” on the new Chromebook Pixel, a new Material Design overhaul for the virtual keyboard user interface and more.

Here’s the full change log:

Some highlights of these changes are:

  • Autofill settings for credit cards from Google Wallet
  • Enable always-on “OK Google” from anywhere when screen is unlocked on new Chromebook Pixel
  • Physical keyboard auto correction
  • Material design for Virtual keyboard UI

Update: Chrome 43 beta for Android has rolled out too.

More than a year after a failed attempt at establishing a retail presence, Google has opened the first ever Google Shop, reports the Telegraph.

The store, to be called The Google shop, will sell the company’s range of Android phones and tablets, Chromebook laptops, and Chromecast TV services.
