Google Camera app from latest Nexus phones now rolling out to other devices

As you may know the user interface of the Google Camera app was updated with the Nexus 5X and 6P. Out for over a month, the new camera update was nowhere to be found on other devices, until today…

The new camera UI offers a quicker way to switch from photo to video mode, while hiding less used features like photo sphere, panorama, and lens blur. Those modes and the Settings menu are now available by tapping on a hamburger button. Previously located above the shutter button, controls for timer, HDR, and flash were moved to the top right corner. To the left of the shutter button is the ability to switch between the back and front facing cameras and on the right is quick access to the camera roll.

The UI is much more minimal (dare I say iOS-like?), with no option to manually change the exposure. Compared to camera apps made by LG and Samsung especially, users have far less granular control and are made to more heavily rely on the automatic mode. Many reviews of the latest Nexus devices noted the slow performance of the camera app and hopefully this update will improve that while bringing a snappy performance for all other phones. The update is currently rolling out to devices running Marshmallow on the Play Store.
