With Android 4.4 KitKat finally officially announced, many users now begin the agonizing process of waiting for their device to receive the update. As we are all well aware off, it can take a long time for Android updates to make their way to the majority of users. Things have started to improve recently, however, and with the release of Android 4.4, several manufacturers have already announced their upgrade plans. Here’s a running list of devices already confirmed to get the udpate along with release dates:
HTC
- HTC One (including carrier models) – By January
- HTC One Google Play Edition – Within 15 days
Motorola*
- DROID Ultra
- DROID Maxx
- DROID Mini
- Moto X
*Motorola has yet to announce specific timeframes.
Nexus Devices
- Nexus 4 – “Coming weeks”
- Nexus 7 – “Coming weeks”
- Nexus 10 – “Coming weeks”
Samsung
- Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition – “Coming weeks”
Sony
- Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 will get the 4.4 update first – no timeframe yet
Ideally, Motorla updating fewer devices will mean that the updates come faster, but it also means that a smaller percentage of users will get the update. There’s always the possibility of more devices being added, but for the time being, these are the only devices Motorola is guaranteeing an update to.
As for Nexus devices, the Galaxy Nexus will not receive an update to Android 4.4. Now that it is two years old, Google noted that the device now falls outside of its 18-month window in which it supports updates for devices.
As you would expect, HTC plans to keep its Sense 5.5 overlay on top of Android 4.4. The company couldn’t elaborate on how the KitKat features would be integrated into Sense, however.
Samsung has been quiet regarding its plans to rollout Android 4.4, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted on the latest news out of the company. Also it’s worth noting that carriers could cause issues for all manufacturers, since they have to approve an update before it can be sent out to devices on its network.
