Oppo launches 5-inch R7 & 6-inch R7 Plus smartphones, global availability next month

Chinese manufacturer Oppo has announced two new mid-market smartphones, the R7 and R7 Plus – going on sale in China tomorrow, with the international rollout expected next month, reports GSM Arena.

Both devices are powered by the Qualcomm 615 chipset with a 64-bit octa-core processor and 3GB RAM, with a modest 16GB storage on the R7 and 32GB on the larger model. Both models have 13MP cameras, the Plus gaining a twin-LED flash and a more sensitive sensor. The devices are running Android 5.1 Lollipop, but with the company’s own ColorOS shell overlaid.

Curiously, while the R7 Plus manages a near edge-to-edge display, the smaller version has relatively thick bezels. Chinese pricing is equivalent to $400 for the R7 and $480 for the R7 Plus, a fairly hefty price for a brand which hasn’t yet achieved mainstream recognition outside of China.

The company, which has been gradually moving upmarket from the low-end products it started with ten years ago, is also rumored – rather sketchily – to be working on an Android Wear smartwatch.
