Google is now further localizing the voice in their apps for Australian users. The new accent will sound more familiar to those down under and be better able to pronounce place names and understand local colloquialisms for tasks and actions.
Over the past few days, several users have reported the new voices, but with today’s launch it should begin rolling out to everybody in all of Google apps with voice feedback. Many Australians have applauded the new voice for being better able to pronounce local names, especially those aboriginal in origin. It should be available in both Google’s Android and iOS apps.
In a comment to Gizmodo Australia, the company says that users are more relaxed when hearing the voice and as such 30% more likely to speak something versus typing it out. Additionally, the app will be more familiar with Australian colloquialisms for certain tasks:
