Last year, Waze decimated voice command support on Android Auto, and now users are reporting issues with commands not working yet again.
Waze for Android Auto is one of just a few mapping apps for the platform, and it offers some features and perks that Google Maps does not. For example, you can see and report police, traffic jams, road hazards, and more, as well as getting crowdsourced info on your route. It’s a useful service, which is why so many people use it.
But, in May of 2023, Waze confirmed that it had intentionally ripped out most voice commands from its Android Auto app. As of that time, users were only available to use voice commands to navigate to preset “home” and “work” locations, rather than being able to input any location or address. That functionality came back not long after, but is now broken again.
Waze users across Google’s support forums and Reddit report that voice commands are no longer working. When asking for directions to a specific address or a business name, Google Assistant accepts the command, but Waze doesn’t do anything with the information. It’s obviously very frustrating.
The issue doesn’t seem to be affecting all users, but has been relatively widespread since the end of December.
