Sony has joined the likes of Motorola, HTC and Google in announcing which of its products will (eventually) receive the sought-after update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Sony’s list includes several Xperia devices, old and new, and spans devices back to 2013. So, even if you have a Sony Xperia M5, you’ll be able to get the brand new OS on your device at some point. The Xperia-makers state in their blog post that they’ve “been working hard to bring this major update to as many of our devices as possible, as quickly as we can.”
Sony’s entire list goes as follows:
- Xperia Z5
- Xperia Z5 Compact
- Xperia Z5 Premium
- Xperia Z4 Tablet
- Xperia Z3+
- Xperia Z3
- Xperia Z3 Compact
- Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
- Xperia Z2
- Xperia Z2 Tablet
- Xperia M5
- Xperia C5 Ultra
- Xperia M4 Aqua
- Xperia C4
With 14 devices on the list, it marks one of the most inclusive software rollout plans we’ve seen so far. Sony doesn’t give any specific timeframes for any of the devices and notes that delays can happen, especially with carriers and regions involved. Its fine-print also states that while most models are supported, there will be some operator/market exceptions.
Sony also mentions that it has been working on some of the software design and usability improvements of its own to run on top of Marshmallow. While we don’t know exactly what those changes will be, it’s almost certain that it has something to do with the software concept testing it’s been running since earlier this summer. Once specific timeframes are mentioned, or more announcements are made by Sony, we’ll update you with more detail.
