How to use Google Pixel 2 & 2 XL’s ‘free up space’ feature

As storage space on your Google Pixel 2 is limited, precious, and there’s no way to expand it, every once in a while it’s a good idea to through and clean up house. Thankfully, there’s a feature built into the handset that makes this extremely easy to do…

Steps to using Google Pixel 2 & 2 XL’s ‘free up space’ feature

  1. Navigate to the settings menu
  2. Select items to delete
  3. Enjoy the extra storage

1. Navigate to the settings menu

The first thing you need to do is jump into your phone’s settings menu. To do this, pull down your notification tray and tap on the gear icon. Next, select Storage, and at the top of the list, you should see a big blue Free up space button.

Use the images below to help if you get lost along the way.

2. Select items to delete

From this menu, you have two groupings you can choose from: Downloads and Infrequently used apps. Next to each item in the Downloads section, you will see the date you downloaded it and how large the file is. Just check the box next to each item you want to delete.

In the Infrequently used apps category, you are shown how many days it has been since the app was last opened and how much space it takes up. Again, check the boxes next to each thing you wish to delete.

Once you’ve selected everything you wish to remove from your Pixel 2, tap on the Free up X MP button in the bottom right corner. A dialog will pop up confirming that you want to permanently delete these files, and afterward, you will have regained that storage space.

3. Enjoy the extra storage

With the extra storage space, you now have room to download more apps, save some of your favorite movies for a long flight, and more.
