Google Maps update adds biking elevation info, new voice commands, more

Google this afternoon updated its Maps app on Android to version 8.2 with a plethora of new features, enhancements, and changes. The biggest changes come to the biking routes that Maps offers. With this update, biking routes now show elevation, including the ability to compare the elevations for various routes. This, of course, means that you can now easily tell which bike routes will be the easiest on your legs. This feature is listed as beta for now, though.

Also new in this update are several voice actions, including ones for how long until you reach your destination, your next turn, and traffic warnings and updates. The Uber card has also been refreshed and is shown in the car tab of navigation instead of public transportation. There are also various other interface tweaks, including a new voice icon in place of the “person” that used to appear in the search bar. The “Your Places” option is also now in the slide-out navigation menu.

The update is rolling out now, although it is staged, so it could take a few days to hit your device. Keep an eye on the Play Store.
