Action Launcher has always been one of the better known launchers to hit the Play Store, and today, Android developer Chris Lacy has released an updated version of the app with a bunch of new features that takes everything that was already great about the app and brings it up to date for Android 5.0 Lollipop. But this update isn’t just an iterative Material Design update; it packs a bunch of great completely new features as well.
The updated version of this Google Now Launcher-based app is a complete rewrite of its predecessor, and its headlining new feature is called Quicktheme. With this, the launcher will automatically determine which colors are in your wallpaper, and will apply these colors to various parts of Android’s default interface. But it’s not mandatory that you go with the colors that Quicktheme chooses–you can mix and match these as you please and manually apply each color to each system item yourself.
Also, this version of Action Launcher adds two new types of app folders to make your widgets and apps even more accessible. First, Covers, will let you make a folder from an app shortcut and tap the icon to launch the app, but swipe on the app’s icon to open a folder of related apps. Also added are Shutters, which are similar in that they keep apps just one tap away, but swiping on them will reveal a widget of your choosing rather than more apps.
There’s tons of new stuff here. If you ask the app’s description, you’ll find out that literally everything is new:
The word literally is used far too often. But not here. Literally everything in Action Launcher 3 is brand new.
Action Launcher 3 has full support for Android tablets, is a free download (but has in-app purchases to use some of the better features) on the Google Play Store, and has almost 1 million installs. That’s impressive.
