Accelerated Mobile Pages team announces three new ad formats coming to the project

Accelerated Mobile Pages launched in Google Search with support for ads earlier this year, and now the AMP team has shared a blog post detailing the future of ads on the platform. In the blog post, the AMP team explains that it has four central principles when it comes to ads:

  • Faster is better
  • ‘Beautiful’ matters
  • Security is a must
  • We’re better together

Building on that, the AMP team explains that 80 percent of publishers are reporting higher viewability rates for ads since supporting Accelerated Mobile Pages. Furthermore, 90 percent report higher click-through ratios and the “majority” are seeing higher earnings.

The AMP team today, however, is announcing a trio of new developments for ad support this quarter and next. As it details on its blog, it will introduce two new ad formats that are “as beautiful as they are engaging.” Sticky Ads are said to offer greater viewability without sacrificing user experience, while Flying Carpet Ads offer a larger canvas for a more immersive ad experience.

Additionally, the AMP team announced AMP Ads for AMP pages. Essentially, this initiative aims to do for ads what AMP has done for mobile webpages. The team says that AMP Ads “load as fast as the content on AMP.”

  • “Beautiful” matters: Two new formats that are as beautiful as they are engaging.
    • Sticky Ads — greater viewability without sacrificing user experience
    • Flying Carpet Ad — a large canvas for immersive, fast ad experiences
  • AMP Ads for AMP Pages:  Ads that load as fast as the content on AMP

The AMP team says that more info on these new ad initiatives is coming over the next few weeks, but in the meantime you can read more on the AMP blog.
